Description

Snyder et al listed criteria for the grading the severity of duodenal trauma. This can help identify patients who may require more aggressive management. The authors are from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas.


 

Features of severe duodenal trauma - one or more of the following:

(1) blunt or missile injury

(2) >= 75% of circumference involved

(3) involvement of segments 1 or 2

(4) 24 hours or more between injury and repair

(5) injury to the common bile duct

 

Mild duodenal trauma involved all of the following:

(1) stab wound

(2) involvement of < 75% of circumference

(3) involvement of segments 3 or 4

(4) less than 24 hours between injury and repair

(5) no injury to the common bile duct
