Criteria of Silver and Tavassoli for Minimally Invasive (Microinvasive) Breast Carcinoma

Description

Silver and Tavassoli proposed criteria for a minimally invasive (microinvasive) carcinoma of the breast. Several different definitions have been used over the years to characterize this lesion. The authors are from the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP) and National Cancer Institute (NCI) in Washington, D.C.

Parameters:

(1) number of foci of invasion

(2) diameter of focus/foci of invasion

1	<= 2 mm	microinvasive
<= 3	<= 1 mm	microinvasive

If the exceptions to these are collected, then the following table can be generated.

Interpretation:

• The risk of metastases to lymph nodes is very low for a true microinvasive carcinoma and the prognosis should be excellent.
