Description

Silva et al developed criteria for therapeutic response seen in patients with schistosomal myeloradiculopathy (SMR). These can help compare the effectiveness of different treatment protocols. The authors are from the Federal University of Minas Gerais and Sarah Kubitscheck Hospital in Brazil.

Classification

complete improvement in neurologic status

full recovery

clinical improvement with minor defects that do not interfere with activities of daily living

partial recovery without functional limitation

clinical improvement with the presence of (a) permanent disabling weakness, (b) severe urinary dysfunction, (c) severe intestinal dysfunction, and/or (d) sensory loss

partial recovery with functional limitation

no change in clinical status

no recovery

 

where:

• Disabling weakness may include the inability to ambulate without help.

• Urinary dysfunction indicates urinary retention or incontinence.

• Intestinal dysfunction indicates fecal retention (constipation) or incontinence.

• The classification needs a category for clinical progression or deterioration.
