Description

Sharpe et al use the presence or absence of a destructive colon injury as the starting point for patient management. Their initial algorithm (29.15.20) was updated to define criteria based on penetrating versus blunt trauma. The authors are from the University of Tennessee

Criteria for a destructive colon injury after blunt trauma:

(1) mesenteric devascularization

(2) full-thickness perforation of the colon wall

(3) serosal tear involving >= 50% of the colon's circumference

Criteria for a destructive colon injury after penetrating trauma:

(1) devacularization of segment

(2) significant tissue loss

(3) wound > 50% of the colon's circumference (includes complete transection)
