Schroeck et al reported criteria for inappropriate antibiotic therapy in a patient with bronchitis. The authors are from VA Western New York Healthcare System, University of Buffalo, Erie County Medical Center and East Orange VA.
Criteria for the diagnosis of bronchitis:
(1) cough
(2) absence of fever or other sign to indicate a bacterial infection
(3) exclusion of pneumonia on chest X-ray
Appropriate therapy for bronchitis:
(1) supportive care
(2) no antibiotic therapy
Any antibiotic therapy is inappropriate for uncomplicated bronchitis.
