Description

Sarin et al listed criteria for diagnosing portal vein thrombosis in a patient with cirrhosis. The authors are from the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences in New Delhi, the Mayo Clinic, Chiba University, Centro Hospitalar do Porto and Hopital Beaujon (Clichy, France).


Major criteria:

(1) Child's class B or C cirrhosis

(2) past history of resolved PVT

(3) hypercoagulable state (presence of prothrombotic risk factors)

 

Minor criteria:

(1) large portosystemic shunt and/or large intragastric varices

(2) active hepatocellular malignancy

(3) history of systemic venous thrombotic events or recurrent abortions

(4) signs and symptoms of acute abdomen

(5) new onset or worsening of portal hypertension

(6) recent intra-abdominal intervention

(7) portal blood flow velocity less than 15 cm per second on a previous Doppler exam

 

High risk of portal vein thrombosis:

(1) >= 2 major criteria

(2) >= 1 major and >= 2 minor criteria

(3) >= 4 minor criteria
