Description

Rotes and Argany identified clinical criteria for identification of joint hypermobility.

Clinical findings:

(1) thumb abduction

(2) elbow hyperextension > 10 degrees

(3) finger extension at the metacarpophalangeal joint > 90°

(4) knee hyperextension > 10 degrees

(5) palms flat on the floor

(6) external shoulder rotation

(7) cervical rotations

(8) cervical inflexions

(9) hips abduction

(10) metatarsophalangeal extension > 90°

(11) lumbar lateral hypermobility

where:

• According to Bulbena et al (1) finger extension is usually measured in the fifth finger; (2) thumb abduction is measured as <= 21 mm between the thumb and the forearm; (3) clenched fists can be used rather than flat palms.

Each finding present was assigned 1 point.

total score =

= SUM(points for clinical findings present)

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 11

• Cutoffs to identify cases with joint hypermobility may be set at >= 5 or >= 6.
