Description

Roberts et al evaluated men who underwent needle biopsy of the prostate gland and who subsequently developed an infection. The authors are from the Mayo Clinic.


Type of infection after the biopsy - one or more of the following:

(1) urogenital infection

(1a) urinary tract infection

(1b) urethritis

(1c) prostatitis

(1d) prostatic abscess

(2) bacteremia

(3) fever > 38.5°C

 

where:

• The significance of fever depends on whether the patient had an elevated temperature prior to the procedure. However, most urologists would not perform the procedure in a man with active infection.

 

Management may include one or more of the following:

(1) oral antibiotics

(2) intravenous antibiotics

(3) hospitalization

 

A major infection is indicated by one or more of the following:

(1) presence of bacteremia

(2) need to hospitalize

(3) administration of intravenous antibiotics
