Raad et al developed criteria for the diagnosis of catheter-related bloodstream infection. The authors are from M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.
Requirements:
(1) automated blood culture machine, allowing accurate timing of positive cultures
(2) blood cultures collected simultaneously from the intravenous catheter and a peripheral vein
(3) exactly the same amount of blood in both cultures
Criteria – all of the following:
(1) same species isolated in both cultures
(2) same biochemical and antibiotic susceptibility pattern
(3) culture of blood culture taken from intravascular catheter turns positive >= 120 minutes before the culture taken from the peripheral vein
