Description

Petersen et al used criteria the diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment. These patients have normal cognitive function except for memory. The authors are from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester.

Criteria for mild cognitive impairment:

(1) complaint of memory loss (by patient or an informant)

(2) normal activities of daily living (no impairments)

(3) normal general cognitive function

(4) abnormal memory for age (score more than 1.5 SD below mean for age)

(5) not demented (fails to meet criteria for dementia)

where:

• One variation is to change the first criterion to a cognitive complaint so that it may include other domains other than memory.
