Description

Oakland et al defined what constitutes a safe discharge for a patient with lower gastrointestinal bleeding. The occurrence of a safe discharge is associated with a minor and clinically stable bleed. The authors are from multiple institutions in England and Canada.


Patient selection: lower gastrointestinal bleeding (LGIB)

 

Criteria for a safe discharge after lower gastrointestinal bleeding - all of the following:

(1) no rebleeding

(2) no transfusion of red blood cells

(3) no therapeutic intervention to control bleeding (endoscopic, surgical, radiologic)

(4) no readmission for lower GI bleeding within 28 days

(5) no death (all cause)

 

An Oakland score <= 8 is associated with a minor bleed.
