Nystrom et al proposed criteria to define when a patient has recovered from an intra-abdominal infection. The authors are from the Joint Working Party of SIS North America and Europe.
Criteria

return to normal physiology
acute physiology score (APS) from Apache II <= 2
afebrile
<= 37.8°C for 24 hours
gastrointestinal motor activity has returned to normal
passage of gas or feces per rectum or ostomy
gastrointestinal function is present
tolerance of ostomy feedings, either by mouth or by tube
mental status restored
alert and oriented to person, place and time, or returned to pre-illness baseline
Recovery is defined as the presence of 4 or 5 of the above criteria.
