Description

Nielsen et al reported criteria for the diagnosis of attenuated familial adenomatous polyposis (AFAP). This disorder shows a spectrum of polyposis milder than familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) but shares some of its complications. The authors are from Leiden University, University of Nijmegen, and Amsterdam Medical Center in the Netherlands.


 

Criteria for the diagnosis of AFAP - both of the following:

(1) one or both of the following:

(1a) >= 2 first-degree relatives with 10-99 adenomatous polyps diagnosed after the age of 30 years

(1b) 1 first-degree relative with 10-99 adenomas diagnosed after the age of 30 years AND (1 first-degree relative with colorectal carcinoma and < 10 adenomas)

(2) no family members with classic FAP (> 100 adenomatous polyps prior to age 30 years)
