Description

McGeer et al reported criteria for the diagnosis of infections within long-term care facilities. One set of criteria deal with infections of the eye, ears, nose or mouth. The authors are from Mount Sinai Hospital (Toronto), Centers for Disease Control, Yale-New Haven Hospital, University of California at San Diego, University of Manitoba, Ontario Nursing Home Association, Ontario Ministry of Health, Clarkson Hospital (Omaha) and the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.


Disorders:

(1) conjunctivitis

(2) ear infection

(3) oral or perioral infection

(4) sinusitis

 

Criteria for conjunctivitis:

(1) Pus from one or both eyes, present for >= 24 hours.

(2) New or increased pink eye for >= 24 hours (conjunctival redness with or without other symptoms (pain, itch) AND other cause (trauma, allergy) excluded.

 

Criteria for ear infection - one or more of the following:

(1) A diagnosis of an ear infection is made by a physician after an examination.

(2) New onset of purulent drainage from one or both ears.

(3) New onset of nonpurulent drainage from one or both ears with symptoms (ear pain, erythema, etc).

 

Criteria for oral or perioral infection (including oral candidiasis):

(1) A diagnosis of oral or perioral infection is made by a physician or dentist after an examination.

 

Criteria for sinusitis:

(1) A diagnosis of sinusitis is made by a physician after an examination.
