Description

Lv et al listed criteria for diagnosing dysautonomia following severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). The authors are from Shanghai Institute of Neurosurgery and the Second Military Medical University in Shanghai.


 

NOTE: The criteria are based on those of Baguley et al and others described under PAID (see 17.49.05, above)

 

Dysautonomia requires:

(1) at least 5 cliical findings occurring simultaneously (paroxysm)

(2) at least one daily paroxysm for at least 3 consecutive days (Blackman et al)

(3) exclusion of infection, medications or other cause (if ascribing to TBI)

 

Clinical findings

(1) hyperthermia with body temperature > 38.5°C

(2) tachycardia with pulse > 120 beats per minute

(3) tachypnea with respiratory rate > 30 breaths per minute

(4) hypertension with systolic blood pressure > 160 mm Hg

(5) hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)

(6) decerebrate or decorticate posturing

(7) increased muscle tone with dystonia, rigidity and/or spasticity
