Description

Lewis et al listed criteria for a basaloid squamous cell carcinoma (BSCC) of the larynx. The authors are from Washington University, University of Utah, University of Pittsburgh and the University of Alabama.


 

Clinical features:

(1) The tumor has a predilection for the supraglottic larynx.

(2) The tumor is strongly associated with smoking.

 

Pathologic features:

(1) presence of a basaloid component:

(1a) solid, lobular growth of small cells with scant cytopasm

(1b) round, hyperchromatic nuclei

(1c) focal myxoid material positive on PAS or Alcian blue stains in small cystic spaces

(2) presence of squamous dysplasia, squamous cell carcinoma or focal squamous differentiation

 

Immunohistochemical features:

(1) positive for p63 (nuclear)

(2) positive for cytokeratin 5/6

(3) positive for cytokeratin 34betaE12

(4) negative for chromogranin A

(5) variable staining for synaptophysin and neuron-specific enolase (NSE)
