Description

Lecler et al proposed criteria for the Transient Perivascular Inflammation of the Carotid Artery (TIPIC Syndrome). The authors are from multiple institutions in France.

The term carotidynia is considered confusing and the term should no longer be used. Some patients previously diagnosed as having carotidynia fulfill the criteria for TIPIC syndrome.

Major criteria for TIPIC syndrome:

(1) presence of acute pain overlying the carotid artery with or without radiation to the head

(2) eccentric perivascular infiltration (PVI) on imaging

(3) exclusion of other diagnosis

(4) improvement within 14 days with or without anti-inflammatory drug therapy

Minor criteria:

(1) self-limited intimal soft plaque
