Description

Jangouk et al modified the Baveno VI criteria for ruling out high-risk esophageal varices in a patient with compensated cirrhosis. A patient meeting these criteria may not need screening endoscopy. The authors are from Yale University, VA-Connecticut Healthcare System, University of Modena and Reggio Emilia and Federal University of Sao Carlos.

Patient selection: compensated cirrhosis (a patient with decompensated cirrhosis is assumed to have varices)

Baveno VI criteria for ruling out varices:

(1) transient elastography < 20 kPa

(2) platelet count > 150,000 per µL

Criteria of Jangouk et al:

(1) platelet count > 150,000 per µL

(2) MELD <= 6
