Description

Healey proposed criteria for the diagnosis of polymyalgia rheumatica in 1984.


 

Criteria for diagnosis - all of the following:

(1) age of the patient > 50 years

(2) erythrocyte sedimentation rate > 40 mm/h

(3) bilateral pain for >= 1 month involving >= 2 of the 3 target body regions

(4) absence of other diagnoses capable of causing the musculoskeletal symptoms

(5) morning stiffness lasting more than 1 hour

(6) rapid response to prednisone (<= 20 mg per day)

 

Body regions:

(1) neck

(2) shoulders

(3) pelvic girdle
