Description

Hanauer et al listed criteria for response to therapy in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC). The authors are from the University of Chicago, the Mayo Clinic, Mount Sinai School of Medicine, Long Island Clinical Research Associates, Greater Cincinnati Gastroenterology Associates, Richmond Gastroenterology Associates and Proctor & Gamble Pharmaceuticals.


 

Patient selection: moderately active ulcerative colitis (based on physician's global assessment, PGA)

 

Parameters:

(1) frequency of bowel movements

(2) blood in stool

(3) endoscopic appearance

(4) patient's functional assessment (PFA)

• The score has features of the Mayo and similar scores.

 

total score = physician's global assessment =

= SUM(points for all 4 parameters)

 

The therapy was considered successful if there was clinical improvement based on one of the following:

(1) complete remission

(2) clinical response to therapy

 

Criteria for complete remission:

(1) sum of all 4 parameters = 0

 

Criteria for clinical response to therapy:

(1) decrease in points for the sum of all 4 parameters

(2) decrease in points for one or more of the 4 parameters

(3) no increase in points for any of the 4 parameters
