Gustina et al reported criteria for biochemical cure of acromegaly as determined at the International Consensus Conferences in Cortina d.Ampezzo and Monte Carlo.
Patient selection: patient treated for acromegaly
Criteria for cure - all of the following:
(1) basal growth hormone (GH) serum concentration < 2.5 micrograms/L
(2) serum IGF-I concentration is normal for age and gender
(3) serum GH suppressed to below < 1 microgram/L during oral glucose tolerance test
The chances of biochemical cure by surgery alone is reduced if the tumor is large and invasive or if it has a high secretory activity.
