Description

Graus et al reported criteria for the diagnosis of various types of autoimmune encephalitis. One of these is Hashimoto's encephalitis. The authors are from multiple institutions from around the world.


Patient selection: encephalitis

 

Criteria for Hashimoto encephalitis - all 6 of the following:

(1) encephalopathy with seizures, myoclonus, hallucinations or stroke-like symptoms

(2) subclinical thyroid disease, usually mild and usually hypothyroidism

(3) brain MRI is normal or shows non-specific findings

(4) presence of serum anti-thyroid antibodies (anti-thyroid peroxidase, anti-thyroglobulin)

(5) absence of neuronal autoantibodies in CSF and serum

(6) reasonable exclusion of alternative causes
