Description

Gennarelli et al listed criteria for diffuse axonal injury (DAI) followng severe brain injury.


 

Criteria for the diagnosis of DAI:

(1) Glasgow Coma Score (GCS) <= 8

(2) duration of impaired consciousness > 6 hours

(3) MRI or CT study showing:

(3a) absence of large extracerebral and/or intraparenchymal lesions

(3b) presence of small, nonexpansive, punctate hemorrhages in the brainstem, corpus callosum and at the gray-white matter interface.

 

where:

• A small hemorrhage is < 15 mm in diameter.
