Description

Gaffo et al developed provisional criteria for the diagnosis of a flare of activity in a patient with gout. The authors are from multiple institutions from around the world.


Patient selection: established gout

 

Parameters:

(1) any warm joint reported by the patient

(2) any swollen joint reported by the patient

(3) patient perceived that s/he is having a flare

(4) patient reported pain at rest on a 10 cm VAS scale

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 4

• A score of >= 3 had a sensitivity of 91% and specificity of 82% (Youden 0.73).

• A score of 4 has a sensitivity of 72% and specificity of 96% (Youden 0.68).

• A score of >= 2 had a sensitivity of 98% and specificity of 60% (Youden 0.58).
