Description

Evans et al reported a new definition for cachexia from any cause. The authors are from the United States, Canada and Europe.


Criteria for cachexia - both of the following:

(1) weight loss - one or both of the following:

(1a) weight loss > 5% within 12 months (corrected for fluid retention)

(1b) body mass index < 20 kg per sq meter

(2) >= 3 of the following:

(2a) decreased muscle strength

(2b) fatigue

(2c) anorexia with decreased calorix intake

(2d) low fat-free mass index (lean tissue depletion/wasting; mid upper arm circumference < 10th percentile for age and sex; appendiceal skeletal muscle index)

(2e) abnormal laboratory tests (serum CRP > 5 mg/dL; increased IL-6; hemoglobin < 12 g/dL; serum albumin < 3.2 g/dL)
