Description

Dreischulte and Guthrie reported criteria for the recognition of high-risk prescribing. The authors are from the University of Dundee.


Criteria for high-risk medication prescription by a healthcare professional - both of the following:

(1) evidence that exposure to the drug is associated with significant risk of harm to a patient

(2) at least one of the following:

(2a) the drug was prescribed when it could be avoided

(2b) the drug was prescribed but the provider fails to closely monitor OR to review regularly for appropriateness of continue use

 

Drug use could be avoided by:

(1) using a safer alternative

(2) not giving a drug at all (drug therapy not necessary)
