Dawson et al published criteria for evaluating a patient with trachoma. These can help to determine the severity of the infection and the risk of disability. This was published through the World Health Organization (WHO).
Parameters (5):
(F) – upper tarsal follicles, centrally located
(P) – upper tarsal papillary hypertrophy and diffuse infiltration in the upper tarsus
(C) – conjunctival scarring
(T/E) – trichiasis (eyelashes) or entropion
CC – corneal scarring
Items C, T/E and CC can result in permanent disability.
