Description

Corpechot et al identified findings associated with a biochemical response to ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) in a patient with primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC). The authors are from Saint-Antoine Hospital, Public Assistance-Hospitals of Paris and Pierre et Marie Curie University in Paris.

Patient selection: primary biliary cirrhosis treated with ursodeoxycholic acid for 1 year

Criteria for response - all of the following:

(1) serum alkaline phosphatase <= 3 times the upper limit of normal

(2) serum AST <= 2 times the upper limit of normal

(3) serum total bilirubin <= 1 mg/dL

Risk factors for death or liver transplant:

(1) failure to achieve a complete response

(2) histologic grade 3 or 4 at baseline

(3) baseline serum total bilirubin > 1 mg/dL

(4) moderate to severe interface hepatitis at baseline
