Description

Coffin et al reported criteria for mucosal barrier injury (MBI)-related bloodstream infections (BSI). The authors are from multiple children's hospitals in the United States.

Criteria for a mucosal-barrier injury associated gastrointestinal insufficiency event - all of the following:

(1) underlying intestinal condition (see below)

(2) evidence of intestinal insufficiency with receipt of parenteral nutrition <= 7 days prior to onset of infection

(3) mucosal barrier injury (MBI) organism isolated (as defined by NHSN, see below)

The patient may meet criteria for a hospital-acquired bloodstream infection or catheter-associtated bloodstream infections (CLABSI).

Underlying intestinal conditions:

(1) bowel resection

(2) gastroschisis or omphalocele

(7) intestinal pseudo-obstruction

(8) intestinal transplantation

(9) microvillous inclusion disease

(10) midgut volvulus

(11) motility disorder

(12) radiation enteritis

(13) tufting enteropathy

MBI organisms:

(1) Bacteroides species

(2) Candida species

(3) Clostridium species

(4) Enterobacteriaceae species

(5) Enterococcus species

(6) Fusobacterium species
