Description

Cimino et al listed criteria for diagnosing ocular tuberculosis. This condition is expected to increase in frequency as tuberculosis reappears in susceptible populations. The authors are from Oespedale S.M. Nuova (Italy), Center for Ophthalmic Specialized Care in Lausanne (Switzerland), University of Lausanne, and the University of Parma.


 

Criteria for the diagnosis of ocular tuberculosis:

(1) ocular disease (anterior uveitis, retinal vasculitis and/or chorioretinitis) consistent with tuberculosis

(2) positive PPD or other evidence of tuberculosis (positive culture, etc)

(3) exclusion of other explanations for the eye involvement

(4) response to appropriate antituberculous therapy (at least 3 months)

• Other conditions to exclude: sarcoidosis, CMV, Epstein-Barr virus, syphilis, Lyme disease, Herpes simplex, Varicella zoster, leukemias.
