Chu and Liaw reported criteria for reactivation of hepatitis B virus in an inactive carrier. The authors are from Chang Gung University in Taipei.
Patient selection - inactive carrier of hepatitis B with history >= 1 year of:
(1) positive HBsAg
(2) negative HBeAg
(3) positive anti-HBe
(4) normal serum ALT levels
Reactivation was defined as:
(1) increase in serum ALT with the serum ALT > 2 times the upper limit of normal (ULN)
(2) positive serum HBV DNA using a hybridization assay
(3) no other explanation for the findings

• In this study patients had evidence of HBeAg exposure.
