Chamot et al listed criteria for the diagnosis of the SAPHO Syndrome, in which patients may manifest synovitis, acne, pustulosis, hyperostosis and/or osteitis. The authors are from multiple rheumatology clinics in Paris.
Criteria for SAPHO syndrome - one or more of the following:
(1) osteoarticular manifestations AND severe acne
(2) osteoarticular manifestations AND palmo-plantar pustulosis
(3) hyperostosis (involving the anterior chest wall, vertebral column, sacroiliac joints or peripheral skeleton) with or without dermatosis
(4) chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis (CRMO) with or without dermatosis
Osteoarticular manifestations:
(1) sterile synovitis
(2) hyperostosis
(3) osteitis
(4) spondylitis
Dermatosis:
(1) palmo-plantar pustulosis
(2) pustular psoriasis
(3) acne conglobata or acne fulminans
(4) hidradenitis suppurativa
Exclusion criteria (Hayem et al, page 162):
(1) septic osteomyelitis
(2) septic arthritis
(3) infectious palmoplantar pustulosis
(4) palmoplantar keratoderma
(5) diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis
(6) osteoarticular manifestations of retinoid therapy
