Description

Blaser et al reviewed the criteria which have been used to described enteral feeding intolerance. The authors are from the University of Tartu in Estonia, University of Adelaide and the Royal Adelaide Hospital in Australia.

Patient selection: enteral feeding

Criteria for feeding intolerance:

(1) large gastric residual volume (GRV)

(2) gastrointestinal symptoms temporally associated with enteral feedings

(3) inadequate delivery of enteral nutrition

A large gastric residual volume may range from 150 to 500 mL, up 1,000 ml. In the implementation >= 250 mL will be used.

Gastrointestinal symptoms may include:

(1) diarrhea

(2) vomiting

(3) abdominal distension

Inadequate delivery of enteral nutrition may be based on:

(1) less than 70-90% of intended calories (energy requirements)

(2) less than 500-750 kcal per day.

Less than 750 kcal or less than 80% of target may be used in the implementation.
