Description

An international pediatric sepsis consensus conference reported criteria for organ dysfunction associated with sepsis syndromes.


Hepatic dysfunction - one or both of the following:

(1) serum ALT > 2 times the ULN for age

(2) serum total bilirubin >= 4 mg/dL AND not a neonate

 

Renal dysfunction - one or both of the following:

(1) serum creatinine >= 2 times ULN for age

(2) serum creatinine >= 2 times baseline serum creatinine

 

Hematologic dysfunction - one or more of the following:

(1) INR > 2

(2) platelet count < 80,000 per µL

(3) drop in platelet count >= 50% from maximum over past 3 days

 

Neurologic dysfunction - one or both of the following:

(1) Glasgow Coma Score (GCS) < 11

(2) acute change in mental status with decrease in GCS >= 3 from baseline (if abnormal)

 

Respiratory dysfunction - one or more of the following:

(1) PaO2 to FIO2 ratio < 300 in absence of cyanotic heart disease or pre-existing lung disease

(2) PaCO2 > 65 torr

(3) PaCO2 >= 20 mm Hg over baseline

(4) proven need for FIO2 > 50% to maintain oxygen saturation >= 92%

(5) need for nonelective invasive or noninvasive mechanical ventilation
