Description

Aletaha et al used two measures of disease activity to evaluate the response of patients with rheumatoid arthritis to therapy. These can help to separate responders from nonresponders and to identify patients more likely to progress. The authors are from the Medical University of Vienna and National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases at NIH.

Patient selection: rheumatoid arthritis

Parameters:

(1) simplified disease activity index (SDAI)

(2) disease activity score in 28 joints (DAS28)

Disease Activity

SDAI

DAS28

remission

<= 3.3

<=2.4

low activity

3.4 to 11

2.5 to 3.6

moderate activity

11.1 to 26

3.7 to 5.5

high activity

> 26

> 5.5

where:

• The use of cutoffs is a little ambiguous (either <= or >=). On page 2627 <= 20 is referenced for SDAI so <= is used in the implementation.
