Description

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine listed criteria for a diagnosis of recurrent hypersomnia in the International Classification of Sleep Disorders.


 

Criteria for recurrent hypersomnia - all of the following:

(1) recurrent episodes of excessive sleepiness

(2) excessive sleepiness lasts from 2 to 28 days (up to 4 weeks)

(3) episodes recur at least once a year

(4) between attacks the patient has normal cognitive function, behavior and alertness

(5) there is no other diagnosis that can explain the findings better (substance use, drug, medical or psychological disorder)
