Salmonella aortitis can be diagnosed if certain criteria are present.
The diagnosis of definite Salmonella aortitis requires isolation of Salmonella species from a culture of the aorta or an aortic thrombus.
Probable Salmonella aortitis - both of the following:
(1) positive blood culture for Salmonella species
(2) one or more of the following:
(2a) prolonged fever after gastroenteritis with a known or palpable aortic aneurysm
(2b) pain in the back, abdomen and/or chest not previously present
(2c) vertebral osteomyelitis and/or paravertebral mass
