Description

Premature ejaculation is a common form of male sexual dysfunction, yet it has no consistent criteria for its diagnosis.


 

Descriptors:

(1) lifelong (primary) vs acquired (secondary)

(2) transient/intermittent vs chronic/long-term

 

Exclusions:

(1) related to substance use (alcohol, drugs, etc)

(2) concurrent sexual dysfunction in partner

 

Different ways of characterizing the condition:

(1) degree of control

(2) amount of stimulation required

(3) number of strokes after insertion required

(4) duration of intercourse in minutes (intravaginal ejaculatory latency period)

(5) degree of distress to the patient

(6) level of partner satisfaction

 

A person might be described as having premature ejaculation if the man:

(1) has no or little control over the timing of ejaculation

(2) ejaculates after minimal stimulation or a few strokes after insertion

(3) ejaculates in less than a minute or two

(4) considers it a problem

(5) has a partner who rarely achieves orgasm

 

It is important to make sure person does not have an unreasonable expectations, expecting a superman performance.
