A patient with cutaneous anthrax who develops severe disease has a higher mortality rate and requires more aggressive therapy.
Features indicating severe disease – one or more of the following:
(1) systemic findings
(2) age of the patient < 2 years
(3) lesions on head and neck
(4) malignant edema (extensive edema about the cutaneous lesion)
Systemic findings include:
(1) fever
(2) malaise
(3) headache
(4) shock
