Description

Some travelers in economy class ask for seating in the emergency exit rows because this provides more leg room. Being seated in an emergency exit row is associated with additional responsibilities during an emergency. It is important that a person with a seat in one of these rows understands the possible demands and is willing to adhere to them.


 

A person seated in an emergency row:

(1) should be > 15 years of age (there is no upper age limit, although physical strength often diminished with age)

(2) be physically capable of opening and moving the door (which may weigh up to 50 pounds (23 kilograms)

(3) should be willing to assist the flight attendants in helping other passengers exit from the plane

 

Contraindications for being seated in an emergency row:

(1) intoxication

(2) severe visually and/or auditory disability

(3) significant physically disability

(4) being emotionally unable to fulfill responsibilities (disabling panic attack, psychosis, etc)

(5) dementia or cognitive disability that could result in confusion

(6) have a medical condition that could be worsened during an emergency and result in incapacitation (unstable angina, other)

 

A person with one or more contraindications should be reseated in another location.
