Many esophageal strictures can be successfully treated with endoscopic dilatation. However, some patients fail the procedure, and these can be further classified.
Patient selection: esophageal stricture treated by endoscopic dilatation
Criteria for recurrent esophageal stricture:
(1) achievement of a target diameter of >= 14 mm
(2) unable to maintain a satisfactory luminal diameter for 4 weeks
Features of a refractory esophageal stricture:
(1) persistent dysphagia score >= 2
(2) inability to achieve a diameter >= 14 mm over 5 dilatation session performed every 2 weeks
