Description

Different people use different criteria to define a reinjury.

Variations:

(1) what constitutes a reinjury

(2) when it occurs

(3) length of recovery relative to season

(4) length of follow-up

Fuller et al define an injury as any physical complaint that results from play or training, irrespective of need for medical attention or time lost from activities.

Reinjury in the strictest form would be an injury at the same site that is similar to the index injury.

Clinical features may include:

(1) worsening performance in functional and clinical tests

(2) onset or worsening of signs and symptoms of injury

(3) modification of rehabilitation or training for > 48 hours

(4) results in time loss from training or game play

Fuller et al require that the reinjury occur after a person returns to full participation in sport. In theory reinjury could also occur during rehabilitation, training or partial return to sport.
