Description

The presence of shock in dengue fever is associated with a worse outcome, and the occurrence of recurrent shock even more so.


 

Criteria for recurrent shock in dengue fever:

(1) dengue fever with first episode of shock

(2) adequate volume resuscitation (using a WHO protocol) with pulse pressure >= 30 mm Hg

(3) subsequent episode of abnormal cool skin on the extremities, tachycardia and pulse pressure <= 25 mm Hg

 

where:

• pulse pressure = (systolic systemic arterial pressure) - (diastolic systemic arterial pressure)
