Description

Annane et al listed the clinical criteria for recovery following mandibular osteonecrosis after radiation therapy in a patient with a head and neck cancer. The authors are from Hopital Raymond Poincare in Garches and Hopital Saint Louis in Paris, France.


 

Criteria for recovery - all of the following:

(1) absence of pain

(2) absence of any area of bone exposure

(3) X-rays show stabilization or regression of X-ray changes

(4) absence or healing of mandibular fracture

(5) absence or healing of any cutaneous fistula

(6) no further need for surgical therapy

 

Criteria for treatment failure - one or more of the following:

(1) presence of mandibular fracture

(2) presence of a cutaneous fistula

(3) need for additional surgical therapy

(4) progression in X-ray changes
