Criteria for the diagnosis of microscopic polyangiitis (mPAN) were proposed at an International Consensus Conference held at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
Lesion: necrotizing vasculitis with few or no immune deposits

Common findings:
(1) necrotizing glomerulonephritis
(2) pulmonary alveolar capillaritis
(3) presence of pANCA or cANCA
Polyarterteritis nodosa is distinguished by:
(1) absence of glomerulonephritis
(2) absence of vasculitis involving arterioles, capillaries and venules
Other forms of small vessel vasculitis are distinguished by:
(1) more than a few immune deposits
