Early, latent syphilis occurs months after exposure, following resolution of secondary syphilis. Clinical symptoms are lacking, but serologic reactivity persists.
Definitive: definitive diagnosis does not exist because lesions are not present in latent stage
Criteria for Presumptive Diagnosis:
(1) absence of signs and symptoms
AND
(2) reactive nontreponemal and treponemal test results
AND
(3) one or both of the following
(3a) nonreactive nontreponemal test within preceding year
(3b) fourfold increase in nontreponemal test titer compared with previous test results for persons with a history of syphilis or of symptoms compatible with early syphilis
Criteria for Suggestive Diagnosis:
(1) reactive nontreponemal test result
AND
(2) history of sexual exposure within the preceding year
