Description

A person who comes close to a patient with a respiratory infection is at increased risk for acquiring that infection.


Criteria for close contact - both of the following:

(1) one of the following:

(1a) having direct contract with body fluids or infectious secretions (being coughed on)

(1b) being < 6 feet (< 2 meters) from the patient for a period of time (typically > 15 minutes)

(2) not wearing recommended PPE

 

Situations considered being exposed to the patient:

(1) healthcare worker caring for

(2) living with

(3) visiting or spending time with

(4) working with or sitting in close proximity

(5) traveling together in a closed vehicle

(6) being within 2 seats in each direction on an airplane

 

Direct contact with body fluids or infectious secretions may include:

(1) secretions on a surface.

(2) being in the same room when an aerosol-generating procedure is performed

 

Factors affecting variability of the exposure:

(1) infectivity of the pathogen

(2) susceptibility of the exposed person

(3) how symptomatic the patient is

(4) whether the patient is wearing a mask

(5) how long the pathogen can survive outside the host
