Apnea refers to a cessation of breathing, which hopefully is transient.
Criteria for the diagnosis of apnea - both of the following:
(1) temporary cessation of respiration
(2) one of the following:
(2a) cessation of respiration for > 20 seconds
(2b) presence of cyanosis (which reverses when breathing returns)
(2c) presence of bradycardia (which reverses when breathing returns)
