Description

Accurate identification of the lipoblast is essential for making the diagnosis of liposarcoma. Weiss and Goldblum list criteria for recognizing a lipoblast.

Histologic features of the lipoblast:

(1) hyperchromatic nucleus that is indented or sharply scalloped

(2) presence of lipid droplets in the cytoplasm

(3) an appropriate background that lacks features indicative of an alternative diagnosis

In some situations there still may be doubt about a tumor. In these cases molecular studies may be necessary to make the diagnosis.
