Description

A patient may have repeated cosmetic surgeries as an addictive behavior.


Patient selection: cosmetic surgery

 

Features of cosmetic surgery addiction may include:

(1) history of multiple cosmetic surgeries

(2) elevation of mood associated with the procedure

(3) depressed mood when unable to have a procedure

(4) no or minimal objective need for the procedure

(5) contact with multiple cosmetic surgeons

 

Concurrent findings may include:

(1) tanning addiction

(2) substance misuse

(3) body dysmorphic disorder

(4) depression and/or anxiety

(5) exercise dependency

 

A person addicted to cosmetic surgery is more likely:

(1) to show dissatisfaction following a procedure

(2) to become disfigured as a result of the procedures
